Is Setting Really that Important for Story?

[Video Transcript] As I've grown as a writer, I have gotten better at incorporating description into the actual storyline. However, I don't ever add too much description because when I read, no matter how good the writing is, no matter how popular the book is, no matter how famous the writer is, if there is too much description of a setting or the physical attributes of a character, then I get bored. And it's an instant turnoff for me. So, what I like to do with setting is make sure that all of the setting actually contributes to either the development of the characters or the furtherance of the plot, which usually go together. And if the setting isn't really that important for the characters or the plot such as, a man and a woman having a conversation in a field. And that field actually doesn't really matter for the plot or the characters. And we could take that conversation and we could put it in a college classroom, or we could put it in a basement and it would still be the same conversation, then that setting is going to get very, very, very limited detail. However, at the setting is important for the plot and the development of the characters such as. We're having a conversation 20 years later, in the same room where we first had sex 20 years ago, that setting is really important for the plot and the development of the characters, so that setting's gonna get more description. However, I'm never gonna put too much description, physical details of description in writing because bottom line, I just don't care.
